The Imperial Council v National Council football matches, also known as the Real 1936 Terraconservan Cup (Creeperian Spanish: Copa Tierraconserveño de Verdad de 1936) in Creeperopolis, was a series of three international football matches which were held in opposition to and protest of the 1936 Terraconservan Cup. The matches were held between two squads which were sent by the Catholic Imperial Restoration Council (Imperial Council) and National Council for Peace and Order (National Council) to represent Creeperopolis in the 1936 Terraconservan Cup, however, when they were denied entry due to neither team participating in the qualifications for the tournament and Creeperopolis was serving a ban for an outbreak of violent riots during the 1932 Terraconservan Cup.

Background

1932 Terraconservan Cup

Creeperopolis hosted the 1932 Terraconservan Cup in San Salvador as the champions of the 1928 Terraconservan Cup. Despite being favorites to repeat as champions, the Creeperopolis national team was defeated 0–4 by Tirol in the semifinals. As a result of the loss, violent riots erupted in San Salvador, leading to many deaths and injuries, and as a result, the final match was moved to Adolfosburg by the Terraconservan Cup Executive Commission. Additionally, due to the riots, Creeperopolis was banned from competing in the 1936 Terraconservan Cup. Despite appealing the ban, Creeperopolis was denied a lifting of the ban.

Creeperian Civil War

On 2 January 1933, Creeperian Emperor Adolfo IV died of Creeperian Malaria, and upon his death, two of his sons both proclaimed themselves to be Emperor: Romero I and Miguel VII. Romero I was supported by the right-wing Creeperian Conservative Coalition (CCC) and Miguel VII was supported by the left-wing People's Social Coalition (PSC), and when the military split along ideological lines, the Creeperian Civil War began between the Catholic Imperial Restoration Council (Imperial Council, Romerists) and the National Council for Peace and Order (National Council, Miguelists). Both factions saw themselves as the legitimate government of Creeperopolis.

Lead up to matches

In 1936, despite not being allowed to participate in qualifications due to still being banned, both the Imperial and National Councils sent a team to Karimun to compete in the 1936 Terraconservan Cup. Upon arriving, both teams, which both claimed to represent Creeperopolis, were denied entry by the Terraconservan Cup Executive Commission, citing the ban that Creeperopolis was serving.

In protest of the Terraconservan Cup Executive Commission upholding the ban, the managers of both teams which were sent, Juan Meléndez Gutiérrez (Imperial Council) and Enrique Montesinos Moreno (National Council) decided to play against each other in protest of the Terraconservan Cup Executive Commission and to prove which government was the legitimate government of Creeperopolis. Both teams searched for a venue which would host their matches, and the Bandung Lautan Api Stadium Corporation offered to host both teams in the Stadium Bandung Lautan Api in Bandung, Karimun. There, both teams practiced and attracted interest from students in the town from several universities, including the Catholic University of Atma Jaya, the Royal Academy of Patravan, and the Bandung Institute of Polytechnic. Many of the students, who were interested in the sport, could either not afford to pay for tickets for the Terraconservan Cup or could not travel to the tournament and grew an interest in the upcoming matches between the Imperial Council and National Council as a replacement for the Terraconservan Cup. The Imperial and National Council agreed that three matches would be held: one on the day the Terraconservan Cup group stage began (19 June 1936), one on the day the Terraconservan Cup knockout stage began (28 June 1936), and one on the day after the Terraconservan Cup final (6 July 1936).

Squads

The squad of the Imperial Council consisted of sixteen players: one goalkeeper, five defenders, six midfielders, and four forwards. Some of the players had some experience with the Creeperopolis national team, while some had no prior experience with the national team. Forward Federico Rivas Velázquez was chosen as the squad's captain, as he had prior experience with the national team, competing at the 1930 Copa Sur, 1931 Hispanic Cup, and 1932 Terraconservan Cup for a total of twenty-three caps. Other players who competed in those three tournaments include goalkeeper Carlos Villarreal Dávalos, defender Alfonso Jiménez Castro, and midfielder Adolfo Suñer Jiménez. The squad's manager was Juan Meléndez Gutiérrez, who managed the Creeperopolis national team to victories in the 1928 Terraconservan Cup and 1930 Copa Sur. He was chosen as the manager, as the manager who succeeded him, Simón Dávalos Figueroa, was killed in 1934 as a part of the Creeperian Civil War.

National Council

The squad of the National Council consisted of sixteen players: one goalkeeper, five defenders, five midfielders, and five forwards. Like the Imperial Council, some of its players had experience with the national team while others did not. The squad's captain was Jorge Herrera Galdámez who had accumulated twenty-three caps with the national team at the 1930 Copa Sur, 1931 Hispanic Cup, and 1932 Terraconservan Cup. Other players with significant experience on the national team include Isaías Santín Cruz and Miguel Salinas Enríquez. Enrique Montesinos Moreno, the assistant manager under Dávalos Figueroa, was selected as the squad's manager.
