Mapastepec is a village along the Zapatista River. It was the site of the Battle of the Zapatista River during the Creeperian Civil War in 1949. It was also the site one of the largest massacres during the Mara War, the Mapastepec Massacre, on July 2, 1998-July 3, 1998. The massacre killed 8,184 people and 195 more were abducted, 97% of the total population.
