The Pupusa Riot was a riot which occurred in February 1985 which was started over a simple disagreement which escalated into a multi-day riot which was fueled by anti-Lyoan sentiment in Escuinbulco, San Salvador, Creeperopolis. The riot resulted in 40 to 55 deaths and resulted in Lyoa severing ties with Creeperopolis and supporting the Juan Horacio Palafox Mendoza Revolutionary Council in the San Carlos Islands Crisis

Background

On 23 March 1979, Major Laurent Tulossa overthrew Lyoan President James Sharokoh. Sharokoh left for exile in Creeperopolis following the coup. During the 1970s and 1980s, anti-Lyoan sentiment grew, specifically in San Salvador, due to an increase in Lyoan immigration to Creeperopolis.

Riot

On 2 February 1985, a Lyoan named Michael Ilunga ate a pupusa at a pupuseria in Escuinbulco. He refused to pay the pupuseria the ₡1 dollar for the pupusa. An argument started over his refusal to pay in which the owner, José Salinas López, pulled a knife and threatened Ilunga. Ilunga's friend, Nathaniel Malemba, pulled a Mokele Arms P77 pistol and pointed it at Salinas López, firing and killing him instantly. Nearby members of Mara Salvatrucha saw what happened and pulled out their owns weapons and fired at Ilunga and Malemba, killing both.

The members of Mara Salvatrucha then began a series of attacks on Lyoans which was fueled by anti-Lyoan sentiment due to the immigration to the region. The Creeperian Imperial Police was dispatched to suppress the riot, but when an officer was shot and killed by Lyoans defending themselves from rioters, the police joined in on the riot and began attacking Lyoans.

After two days of rioting, looting, and burning down Lyoan homes and businesses, Lieutenant General Augusto Cabañeras Gutiérrez commanded the Black Division to suppress the riot.

Aftermath

After the riot was crushed, the Creeperian government estimated that around 40 to 55 people were killed in the riot and over 110 were injured.

International reactions

  • Template:Country data Lyoa: The riot prompted a strong response from the Lyoan government. President Laurent Tulossa stated, "This state-sponsored massacre of Lyoans in Creeperopolis is absolutely unacceptable and the government of the Democratic Republic condemns this to its fullest extent. This act shows the strong prejudice and racism that is present throughout Creeperopolis. The country in its entirety should be shunned and punished for this despicable act". The Lyoan government subsequently cut off all relations with Creeperopolis, expelling its ambassadors in Tigera. Several state-sponsored mass killings against Creeperans living in Lyoa in response to the riot. Tulossa's regime would later back rebels participating in the San Carlos Islands Crisis and would continue to hold a staunch anti-Creeperian stance until it was overthrown in 2002.
