The OU military intervention in Ajakanistan[note 1] is an ongoing military conflict in Ajakanistan. The military intervention is led by the an Ostlandet Union-led coalition known as the OU Task Force for Ajakanistan (OUTFA), which is intervening against the Ajaki government in support of the Free Council of Ajakanistan. OUTFA is composed of the armed forces of Gjorka, New Gandor, and Paleocacher, and it is further supported by military units from Creeperopolis and Pavulturilor.

The military intervention began on 30 November 2022 following the Castlederg missile strike by the Ajaki Army which killed over 200 and injured over 3,000 delegates of the Ostlandet Union and the Free Council of Ajakanistan.

Background

Protests in Ajakanistan

An anti-Kareiv protest in July 2021.

On 26 July 2021, Ajaki pro-democracy activist and politician Aleksi Norvay was poisoned on a flight from Reykanes to Ajakanistan with a Novichok nerve agent after a meeting with Reykani political leaders. He was poisoned by the Ajaki government in an assassination attempt, but Norvay survived and made a full recovery. His poisoning led to the outbreak of protests across Ajakanistan on 28 July 2021. Protestors demanded the resignation of Vladimir Kareiv, the supreme leader of Ajakanistan, the end of authoritarian rule, and the holding of free and fair democratic elections. The protests also called for an end to police violence by the Ajaki Police Force (POLAD), as police engaged in unnecessary beatings against protestors.

The Ajaki government responded to the protests by accepting some of their demands, and agreed to hold democratic elections and engage in democratic reforms with opposition leaders. The first Ajaki democratic election of the 21st century was held on 12 January 2022.[1] The results were published on 26 January 2022, which showed that the ruling Ajaki People's Party (NPA) won a majority of seats in the national legislature.[note 2] The results caused outrage in Ajakanistan, where many opposition leaders accused the Ajaki government of rigging the election through ballot stuffing.[2]

The election resulted in renewed anti-government protests which demanded the removal of Kareiv, the holding of new elections, the end of police violence, and the establishment of a new legislature. Norvay, who was the leader of the Christian Democratic Party (KDP), stated the results were "clearly rigged" and called for Kareiv to be removed from office and "punished".[2] In response to the protests, the Ajaki government cancelled the results of the election and instated a nation-wide ban of all political parties other than the Ajaki People's Party on 27 January 2022. In a speech, Kareiv stated that he knew that protests would erupt as a consequence of the election, and claimed that the protests were an example that democracy "doesn't work".[3] The protests persisted until 2 April 2022.

Ajaki–Paleocacherian conflict

On 29 January 2022, a patrol ship of the Paleocacherian Coastal Patrol (PCP) intercepted an Ajaki trawler in the Fiordland National Park as a result of a Paleocacherian government decree which called for stricter enforcement of the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Upon making contact with the trawler, its crew opened fire on the Paleocacherian ship, killing one officer in the process. Although the trawler attempted to flee, the Paleocacherians managed to board the trawler and arrest its crew, transporting them to Gardena to face criminal charges.[4] They were charged with murder, attempted murder, weapons trafficking, illegal entry into Paleocacherian territorial waters, illegal fishing, poaching a protected species, and resisting arrest.[5]

Rhys McEvoy, the Paleocacherian ambassador to Ajakanistan, stated that the Paleocacherian government was not willing to extradite the fishermen to Ajakanistan, but was open to trying them through the Terraconservan International Court (TIT) should Ajakanistan wish so.[5] Gergoy Pushkin, the Ajaki ambassador to Paleocacher, demanded the immediate release of the fishermen, threatening that Ajakanistan would initiate a naval blockade of Paleocacher and escort Ajaki fishing ships inside of Paleocacher's EEZ.[6] The Paleocacherian government rejected the Ajakis' demands,[7] and on 12 February 2022, the Supreme Marshal Avandeyev Krasimir ordered the deployment of three destroyers, two frigates, one fuel tanker, and five fishing trawlers to Paleocacherian waters, claiming that Ajakanistan did not have to abide by the Terraconserva Council of Nations' (TCN) oceanic treaties as Ajakanistan was not a signatory.[8]

Ajaki and Paleocacherian naval vessels engaged in a skirmish on 20 February 2022, resulting in 600 deaths and the sinking of two ships on both sides.[9] Following the skirmish, the Paleocacherian National Assembly instituted sanctions against Ajakanistan and demanded an apology from the Ajaki government,[10] and Paleocacherian President James Fulkerson later demanded reparations from the Ajaki government.[11] After receiving no official response from the Ajaki government, the Paleocacherian delegation to the TCN introduced TCN Resolution 035 to condemn Ajakanistan's actions, but it was vetoed by the Quebecshirite delegation.[12]

On 2 March 2022, Paleocacherian Trans-Oceanic Airlines Flight 266 was hijacked by Ajakis who demanded the immediate release of the fishermen, resulting in Paleocacherian soldiers organizing a hostage rescue operation at Bostonia International Airport.[13] On 6 March 2022, the Ajaki and Paleocacherian governments agreed to enter into negotiations to defuse tensions between the two countries, and both governments signed the Zhelekabvarosk–Gardena Accord on 5 April 2022. The terms of the accord included the lifting of sanctions and the recognition of Cherzian militias as terrorist organizations by Paleocacher, and Ajakanistan agreeing to paying §22 million selkies in reparations and allowing Paleocacher to try the Ajaki fishermen and captured Ajaki seamen in Paleocacherian courts.[14]
