Charles Amuri Ngatenda Makura[note 1] (Lyoan pronunciation: [ˌtʃɑːr-əls ɑːˈmʊər-iː n-gəˈtɛn-də məˈkuː-rə]; born 12 July 1993), referred to as Carlos in Creeperopolis, is a Lyoan professional soccer player who plays as a forward for the Creeperian soccer club CF Adolfosburg and the Lyoa national team. He is considered to be one of the best players in the Liga Imperial and the best non-Creeperian player.

Early life

Charles Amuri Ngatenda Makura was born on 12 July 1993 in Kasimia, Abari, Lyoa. His father was Charles Leopold Ngatenda Ntmbashi and his mother was Julia Assana Ngatenda Makura Ntalinda. He had a younger brother, John Itisha Ngatenda Makura, who was born in 1995. He was born five years prior to the outbreak of the Lyoan Civil War on 10 August 1998. In 1999, one year into the civil war, with the ongoing Revolutionary United Forces (RUF) offensive northwards towards Kasimia and Tigera, Ngatenda and his family fled Lyoa for refuge in Adolfosburg, Adolfosburg, Creeperopolis, settling in Alturas El Burro, a community heavily populated by Lyoans and Creepero-Lyoans. While in Creeperopolis, he went by Carlos, the Creeperianized form of Charles.

Youth career

In 2005, Ngatenda and his family returned to Lyoa following the conclusion of the Lyoan Civil War in 2003. In 2006, he enrolled in the Ntihura–Kasimia High School and played for the school's soccer. While playing, he distinguished himself as the program's strongest and best player, scoring 31 goals from 2006 to 2010, a school record which still stands today. He led the school to and won the Abari Provincial High School Soccer Championship (APHSSC) in 2009 and 2010, and in 2010, the he led the school to winning the Lyoa High School Soccer Championship (LHSSC).

College career

In his final year of high school, several Lyoan colleges offered him full scholarships to play at their schools, but Ngatenda wanted to play in Creeperopolis, since he lived there for six years of his life and experienced the atmosphere of soccer in Creeperopolis. He saw the Creeperian soccer programs as tougher and better than the Lyoan soccer programs, and in November 2010, after already having graduated high school, he took the Creeperian National University Acceptance Exam (EXACUN), and scored a 910 out of 1,236, 80 above the average that year of 830, passing the exam.

He enrolled in the Saint Alfonso University in Adolfosburg, where he lived from 1999 to 2005, and played for the university's soccer program. He was one of the university's best players in program history, and is considered the best non-Creeperian soccer player to ever play for the university's soccer team, scoring 83 goals in his 112 games.

Professional career

After graduating from Saint Alfonso University in 2015, he was recruited by the CF Adolfosburg soccer team to play beginning in the 2016–17 season of the Liga Imperial, a rare accomplishment by any player, as he skipped playing in the lower Divisions I and II of the National Football Association. CF Adolfosburg was also his favorite Liga Imperial soccer team. He began playing on an ANF Premier Division rookie contract worth ₡40 million colóns[note 2] over 4 years. He turned down offers from CF Salvador and CF Victoria to play on their teams in order to play of CF Adolfosburg.

He played his first game in Week 3 of the 2016–17 season on 4 September 2016, scored his first goal in Week 5 on 18 September 2016, started his first game on 25 September 2016, and scored multiple goals in one game for the first time in Week 16 on 4 December 2016. He played all three games that CF Adolfosburg did in the group stage of the 2017 Copa Creeperiano, scoring one goal, before the team was eliminated from contention as it did not come in first in the group.

In Week 25 on 4 February 2017, as the team was seeking to clench the number one seed and immediately qualify for the semifinals of the Copa Creeperiano, Ngatenda was injured and tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) on his right leg, ending his season before he could play in the Copa Creeperiano. Subsequently, without him playing, the team slipped to the three seed and eventually finished in second in the group, being eliminated from the Copa Creeperiano.

Ngatenda fully recovered from his torn ACL and returned to play in the 2018–19 season season, determined to make the finals of the 2019 Copa Creeperiano. That year, Ngatenda scored a career high 25 goals in the regular season and played all 30 games, the first time in his professional career. The team preformed extremely well and clinched the number one seed, earning a bye in the group stage and immediately qualifying for the semifinals.

Ngatenda had qualified for the Copa Creeperiano Final match for the first time in his career, and in his first final match, he faced CF San Salvador, CF Adolfosburg's biggest rival, whose rivalry extended back to 1904 when both teams were formed. The rivalry is considered the best in the Liga Imperial and the stakes were high for both sides, as if CF San Salvador won, they would clinch their 17th title, while in CF Adolfosburg won, they would clinch their 21st title, the most in the Liga Imperial. On 28 April 2019, the two teams played the 2019 Copa Creeperiano Final, and CF Adolfosburg won the match 4–3 after extra time, claiming the team's 21st title. In the semifinals, however, CF Adolfosburg was defeated 1–2 by CF Nuevo Xichútepa, which eventually one their ninth title in that year's final.
