La'Remontada (Creeperian: Լա'Րեմոնտադա;[note 1] Creeperian for "The Comeback") is the name given to a semifinal football match of the 1918 Imperial Coronation Cup, during which CF Adolfosburg scored 13 goals to overcome an 9-goal aggregate deficit against CF Salvador on 8 September 1918. One week prior, Salvador defeated Adolfosburg during the first leg of the semifinal by a score of 8–0, and then 8 minutes into the second leg, Salvador scored an additional goal to make the aggregate score 9–0. Adolfosburg then proceeded to score 13 unanswered goals, defeating Salvador 13–1 to win the two-legged tie by an aggregate score of 13–9.

After making the comeback against Salvador, Adolfosburg proceeded to defeat CF La'Victoria by a score of 1–0 in the 1918 Imperial Coronation Cup Final, attaining the club's third title in the tournament. Meanwhile, Salvador proceeded to be shut out 0–3 by CF San Salvador in the third place match of the tournament. The 9-goal aggregate comeback by Adolfosburg is the largest comeback in the history of the Imperial Coronation Cup and in the history of CF Adolfosburg, as well as being the largest blown aggregate lead in the history of CF Salvador. Additionally, the match is the most lopsided result of the Imperial Coronation Cup and the Rivalidad Nuevo ("New Rivalry"), the rivalry held between the two clubs.

Background

Quarterfinals

In 1918, the National Football Association (ANF) organized the 1918 Imperial Coronation Cup to be held in celebration of the coronation of Creeperian Emperor Adolfo IV, who assumed the Creeperian throne on 3 June 1918 upon the death of Alfonso V, his predecessor and older brother. Despite the short window of only a little over three months, the National Football Association successfully organized the tournament and Adolfo IV officially opened the tournament on 18 August 1918 at the match between CF La'Unión and CF San Salvador.

CF Adolfosburg and CF Salvador were both competing in the tournament; Adolfosburg was invited by the Emperor and Salvador automatically qualified as the champions of the 1918 Copa Creeperiano earlier in the year. Adolfosburg was first drawn in the quarterfinals against CF La'Libertad, while Salvador was drawn against FC Chalatenango, a club from Castilliano. Both Adolfosburg and Salvador easily defeated their respective opponents over the two-legged ties the clubs played; Adolfosburg defeated La'Libertad 7–1 and 2–1 (9–2 on aggregate) and Salvador defeated Chalatenango 6–3 and 3–1 (9–4 on aggregate).

Alleged suicide rumors

Enrique Quijada Galdámez with CF Salvador in 1921.

On 9 September 1918, the day after the match, the Tribuno de Adolfosburg newspaper issued an article covering the results of the match, and towards the end of the article, a claim is made that one of the Salvador players committed suicide after the match in shame of allowing such a result. The article read: "[...], and then there was the event in which a Salvador substitute jumped off the great bridge in shame of losing a 9-goal lead to Adolfosburg." Although the substitute was not named, the public believed that midfielder Enrique Quijada Galdámez, who did not play in the match, was the one who allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the Grande Adolfo III Bridge. Some people also came forward claiming that they saw Quijada Galdámez jump off the bridge and into the Zapatista River; some stated that he hesitated before jumping, while others claimed that he jumped without any hesitation.

The supposed witnesses and the newspaper were both strongly criticized by Salvador's management, which condemned the newspaper for spreading "objectively false and slanderous information" and rebuked the witnesses for falsely claiming to witness a suicide. Quijada Galdámez himself came out denying the allegations, telling the Gaceta de Adolfosburg, "How can I be dead if I am here telling you that I am not?" Despite the claim being proved to be false, many people in Adolfosburg continued to believe that Quijada Galdámez actually committed suicide, to the point where some even began to claim that the club covered up his death and replaced him with a look-alike to make it appear he was still alive.

As a result of the scandal, the reputation of the Tribuno de Adolfosburg was severely damaged, and Julio Velázquez Macías, the journalist who wrote the article, was fired by the newspaper and was later imprisoned for attempting to steal money from the newspaper. The newspaper eventually was forced to cease operations as a result of the scandal in 1920. It was later revived in 1931, but it was again forced to cease publication in 1933 with the start of the Creeperian Civil War and the arrest of the newspaper's management. Quijada Galdámez continued to play for Salvador until 1928, when he left the club to play for CF Nuevo Xichútepa. He continued to play there until the outbreak of the civil war, where he retired from professional football. His ultimate fate is unknown, and he was last known to be alive during the late-1930s during the middle years of the civil war.
