1988[note 1] is a first-person psychological horror survival video game developed by V.J. La'Libertad and published by V.J. Sur. It is the upcoming fifth installment of the 1900s series, expected to be released in December 2024.

The game is the successor the 2017 game 1978, which received positive reviews from critics and fans of the series. The game was first announced by V.J. Sur in November 2020, and director Alfonso Hidalgeso Quijada stated in March 2022 that it will take place during the Battle of Tuxtla Martínez–Panachor of May 1988.

Development

On 1 November 2020, V.J. Sur announced that the next installment of the 1900s franchise would be released "sometime in late-2024," referring to it by the name 1900s 5, as to not give away the year the occurrences of the video game will occur in. On 26 January 2021, Alfonso Hidalgeso Quijada, the director of the project, announced that the Ministry of Internal Affairs approved of the video game's subject matter, but he did not disclose what the subject was. V.J. Sur had to request permission to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to develop its video games of the 1900s series due to its occurrences in generally controversial events in Creeperian history, with the previous installations of the series being set place during the Crisis of 1928, the Siege of San Salvador, the 1978 San Juan race riots, and the killings of the Mejía Legion.

On 26 March 2022, Hidalgeso Quijada announced that the game would take place during the Battle of Tuxtla Martínez–Panachor, a prison riot and escape attempt at the Tuxtla Martínez–Panachor Maximum Correctional Facility which took place between 3 and 16 May 1988. The riot was suppressed by the Creeperian Army, Creeperian Imperial Police, and National Intelligence Directorate and resulted in the deaths of over 600 prisoners.
