The 2024 New Illyrian congressional election was an election for all seats in the Congress of New Illyricum which was originally held on March 1, 2024. The election initially resulted in the the Vanguardist Party (AP) winning 104 seats, the Democratic Party (DP) winning 84, and 7 Independent candidates winning seats, however the New Illyrian Political Freedom Assurance Committee (NIPFAC) declared the results invalid[1] and a recount was held. After the recount, the AP won 99 seats, the DP won 89, and 7 Independent candidates won seats.[2] The AP is led by incumbent Grand Marshall of the Union Ernesto Luçeo while the recently formed DP is led by Marshall of Trurnia Luçeo Mareo.

Prelude

Aberso–Illyrian War

Pretoria Peace Accords

On October 23, 2023, the Congress of New Illyricum met and officially voted 102 - 97 to sign the Pretoria Peace Accords, officially ending the month-long Aberso–Illyrian War and in turn ratifying the 23rd Amendment to the New Illyrian Constitution. The amendment officially stated that "All political, religious, and economic beliefs are now legal and allowed to be expressed fully. Those expressing beliefs contrary to the dominant belief may hold office and may not be discriminated or persecuted on account of those beliefs." Immediately following the signing of that amendment, the People's Global Communist Unification Coalition (PGCUC), along with several other extremist communist terrorist organizations led a series of protests throughout the nation however in Trurnia the protests became especially violent after the St. Gregorius' Cathedral Bombing. The bombing killed 236 Catholic civilians, in what the New Illyrian government termed to be a "massacre of our brothers and sisters[3]", and in response the New Illyrian ACES Peace Implementation Force (NIAPIF) was deployed[4] as part of the New Illyrian ACES Police Mission. Captain Boulakos II led the force which eventually destroyed several PGCUC bases and mostly[5] stabilized the region.

Election

First tally

On January 3, 2024, Marshall of Trurnia Luçeo Mareo announced the establishment of the Democratic Party (DP) with himself as Chairman, which as a party quickly gained significant traction as the only opposition party to the dominant Vanguardist Party (AP) and began campaigning for the coming elections. Luçeo Mareo and the Democratic Party campaigned as a full spectrum political option which would stress New Illyrian ties with the Alliance of Central Ecrosian States (ACES) and begin to cut ties with Zloveshchiy. However the Vanguardist Party, led by Grand Marshall of the Union and Chairman Ernesto Luçeo, organized their campaign around isolationist political views with the goal of severing ties with ACES and instead turning to more independent nations such as Tumland, Tranquillia, and Montesayette, which all still had generally anti-Cooperation and Development Coalition (CODECO) views.

Polls officially opened on March 4, and early numbers showed very high voter participation across the nation, especially in more western regions such as Illyricum Borealis SS and Illyricum Austeralis SS, which each showed participation numbers in the hundred thousands within two weeks of the opening. However after early large turnout of Vanguardist support throughout the southeastern states, poll numbers collapsed, and Vanguardists held massive leads. Polls closed on April 1, in total 16,114,679 votes were cast, about a 34% participation rate. The AP won 104 seats and majority, with the popular support of 47.5% of the nation, and won eleven of the nineteen States of New Illyricum. The DP won 84 seats, and maintained 50.5% of popular support, and won eight states as well. Seven independent delegates were elected in addition, each with varying political alignments ranging from far left to centrist.[6]
