The 1996 Monsilvan senate election was held on Saturday 10 August 1996 to elect members of the Senate for the 36th Parliament of Monsilva. This was the first election after the increase in senate seats from 60 to 65. Despite not losing or winning any seats, the Reformed National Party lost their lead in the Senate, falling behind the Freedom and Democracy Party which managed to gain, although not in the new districts, all 5 of the extra seats. The Liberal Party, although losing a few districts, managed to gain back in other places which maintained their 7 senate seats.
All 65 seats in the senate were up for election, and as is tradition, the election took place at the same time as the 1996 federal election.
