Marcellus I (690 - 745) was the king of Illyricum from 710 to 716. Marcellus became king through marriage to Maria the Plain, daughter of king Gnaeus I who ruled from 696 to 710. As king, Marcellus began several military campaigns against the Kingdom of Andrafoliam and helped lead Illyricum to victory at the Battle of Tuni in 714 against the Septarban Kingdom. After conflict with Patriarch of Illyricum Johannus Gregorianus, Marcellus was forced to abdicate in 716 and later withdrew to a monastery in the Andaluzian Mountains.
