The Troubles (Terranilian: Kǐrsevaṭ) is a low intensity asymmetric ongoing conflict in Terranihil between Terranilian security forces, left-wing guerrillas, nationalist militias, religious extremists, and crime syndicates. It began in May of 1952 following the Progressive Coup in which the National Progressive Party (PPF) took power of the country and instituted policies suppressing political opposition and restricting the freedoms of religious and ethnic minorities. This led to multiple armed groups engaging in violence with each other and the Terranilian government.

The conflict has spread throughout Terranihil and spilled over into Lyoa. Other nations and armed groups have supported combatants in the Troubles.

The motives of the combatants vary from group to group. The left-wing militants, which include..., claim to be fighting for social justice and/or democracy. Ethnic and religious nationalist groups, which include..., claim to fight for self-determination and improved rights for their group. Astrian, Christian, and Muslim religious extremists, including..., have varying motivations based on their belief systems. Other right-wing paramilitaries include..., who claim to defend against incursions from ethnic and religious minorities and left-wing guerrillas. The Terranilian government claims to be fighting for stability, unity, and the values of national progressivism. Additionally, crime syndicates have engaged in the trafficking of drugs, weapons, and people.

More than 65,000 people have been killed in the Troubles, about half of whom are civilians, and several hundred thousand more people have been displaced

Background

Political and ethnic violence in modern Terranihil has its beginnings in the early days of the republic. Despite the Republican Party's stated goal of upholding religious freedoms, discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities was prevelant on institutional and individual levels. Some people found the unitary power of the state to be oppressive to their people. The Cepezans Movement, a Muslim and Kavardan nationalist political party and militia, was the most active armed group in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It came into conflict with Terranilian security forces and Astrian and Vaktrian nationalists on several occasions. Aramean nationalism was also growing in the early 20th century.

Left-wing violence stems back from the growth of workers' unions and the spread of socialist thought in opposition to the capitalist policies of the Liberal Democratic Party (PḌL). The anarchist Revolutionary Brigade engaged in sabatoge operations against the Quebecshirite-Terranilian Petroleum Company (CPQT) and organized protests. In 1921, the short-lived Terranilian People's Republic was founded in the Upa Forest in northwest Terranihil by a group of communist guerillas. In 1934, the short-lived Minaltar Commune was established by left-wing soldiers. Hezenism, an Islamic socialist ideology with its roots in the Cepezans Movement, came to prevelance in Kavarda in the 1930s.

Following the Ashura Revolution and transfer of power to the Communist Party of Terranihil (PKT), nationalist groups had increased membership, including the Red Cross Party (PKK) and the Vaktrian Union.

The Progressive Coup happened on 12 May 1952, in which a group of national progressive army officers took control of the Revolutionary Command Committee and arrested the communist president Enkart Vaslast. The new president Arkašter Emvǎran instituted Sentanist ultranationalist policies, prioritizing the rights of Astrian Vaktrians over other ethnic and religious groups. Civil rights and freedoms of speech, the press, and religion significantly deteriorated under the National Progressive Party (PPF). The PPF banned several opposition parties, including the anarchist Syndicalist Workers Party, the Hezenist Islamic Socialist League, and the Aramean Socialist Liberation Party. The Red Cross Party was kept illegal due to its Christian fundamentalism and Creeperian fascist ties. This led to increased activity among militant groups.

Early conflict

Leftist resistance

The National Progressive Party's overthrow of the Communist Party's rule immediately led to protests and riots throughout the country. Much of the Communist Party did not initially recognize the PPF following Emvǎran's attempts to rebrand the entire Communist Party as the PPF. A new Communist Party split off and intended to participate in the new government; however, some communists refused to be pushed aside and wanted to reinstate communist rule. The Communist Revolutionary Army (KİK) formed in 1954 with the goal of overthrowing the PPF. It mainly operated in Minaltar and more broadly western Terranihil. Initially, the Communist Party publically distanced itself from the KİK.

Following the ban of the Islamic Socialist League and suppression of Hezenism, an Islamic socialist ideology first prominent in Kavarda, the Kavardan Defense Forces (MTZ) formed in 1955 with the goal of gaining independence for Kavarda. The Aramean Liberation Army (SBA) became the armed wing of the banned Aramean Socialist Party in 1956.
