Rakeo is oppressive nation known for political repression, a stratocratic government, and an affinity toward violence-based technology, and is the second and only other nation located in the Southern Sea. The capital of Rakeo is Olino. It has a two neighboring nations, one to its north in the form of Creeperopolis, with a technologically backwards nation in the west, known as Sequoyah. As of 2020, an estimated 30 million people live in the island nation.
Etymology
Rakeo was simplified from the root word Rakreo in Malnova (literally translated as "old tongue"). This was a combination of the words Ra, Kre, and -o. Ra translates as island, or the concept of being surrounded, kre is a corruption of cruz, and the suffix -o means grouping, or can mean a member of a group.
The meaning of Kre has been in dispute- According to some scholars, it was meant to signify Christian beliefs. Others believe that it was meant as a metaphor for faith more generally. A last camp believes it was an astronomical name, referring the Cruz constellation.
Thus, Rakeo can mean
- The Faithful Island
- The Christian island
- The Island of the Cross
History of Rakeo
Government
Structure
The highest authority in Rakeo following the Rakeoian Civil War has been the Directory of War, lead by General Secretary Richard Cornell. Situated beneath the Directory of War are the Directory of Internal Affairs (DAI), the Directory of Industrial Matters (DIM), and the Directory of Scientific Pursuits (DSP). Authority over offices such as the directories of Education, Diplomacy, and Industrial Science is delegated these central directories and their Directors.
Known subdirectories
Directory of Tourism
Formed in 2020, the Directory of Tourism serves the tourist market to the nation. The current number of documented tourists to Rakeo is 0, making the Directory's purpose rather unclear.
Directory of Internal Affairs
In charge of security in the nation. Known to be heavily deployed in the east to quell unrest after the civil war.
Directory of Industrial Matters
Self described as being charged with the production of militarily necessary commodities, the Directory of Industrial Matters serves as a state-run monopoly that manages most companies in the country. The Directory of Diplomacy and the Subdirectory of Commercial Exports are both operated by DIM.
Political Culture
The governmental structure of Rakeo lends itself to a complex, multilayered, and often troubled bureaucracy. Understandably, this makes dealing with Rakeo's internal administrative and bureaucratic obstacles difficult at times, sometimes interfering with diplomatic affairs. This is exacerbated by Rakeo's ambiguous stance on foreign nationals; there is little done to clarify government policy to outside bodies. The barrier between government and Rakeo is difficult to cross, acting as a strong deterrent to any possible tourism.
Foreign relations
Modern relations
Structure
Rakeoian diplomacy is undeveloped from years of isolationism. The modern Rakeoian directory of diplomacy is a paper department operated by the directory of industrial affairs, which other directories feed requests to. Beyond the tenuous system of official diplomacy, the embassies of Olino are known as serving as backdoor diplomatic relations.
TEU Entrance
A diplomatic trip to Terranihil, which resulted in the addition of Rakeo to the TEU. There are currently allegations that the nation of Rakeo is providing assistance to the Terranihilian government's malgan ethnic cleansing efforts.
Military
The Rakeoian Armed Services (Rakeoian: Rakeoaj Armitaj Servoj) composes the military forces of Rakeo. Originally established under the TRR to fight unruly farmers, soon co-opted other function of society, acting as personal guards for the Archbishops, and as a unified police force.
Human rights
Lack of political freedoms
Rakeo is a one party state, and all news agencies were nationalized immediately following the conclusion of the civil war. In addition, outside journalism is heavily restricted as per 2020 legislation. Prior to 2020, no journalists were documented entering Rakeo under the Stratocratic government.
Discrimination on religious grounds
Many of those who fled the country during the civil war later described mistreatment of militant forces against clergy and Catholics. These allegations could not be substantiated, in part due to a ban on incoming travel put into place shortly after the conclusion of the war.
