The Democratic Coalition, or Red Coalition is a centre-left political coalition in the Monsilvan Republic, consisting of the Freedom and Democracy Party (FDP/ZMD), the Social Democratic Party (SDP/SMD), the Green Party of Monsilva (GPM/SLD) and the Shaoyu Liberation Party (SLP/SJD).

The coalition is the largest of the two main coalitions in the Monsilvan parliament as of June 2023. The Shaoyu Liberation Party operates an agreement with the Freedom and Democracy Party, whereby the FDP will not run any representatives on the island of Shaoyu, as long as the SLP remains loyal to the FDP's core policies.

History

Both names, the colour and the logo of the coalition originate from the Freedom and Democracy Party. The coalition was formed after the 2020 Coalition Agreement in the Monsilvan parliament whereby the two largest parties in parliament, the Reformed National Party and the FDP formed two opposing coalitions in order to prevent a minority government for either of the two parties. The coalition agreement lead to the leaders of the Green Party of Monsilva and the Social Democratic Party forming a coalition with the FDP, while the RNP formed its own coalition. In 2024, the Shaoyu Liberation Party joined the coalition.

The Democratic Coalition was founded with the policies of social democracy, democratic socialism and progressive social and economic policies. However, in order to prevent conflict within the coalition, each party have moderated their policies. This moderation allows all parties to reach across all voters and members of the coalition. The formation of the coalitions was agreed upon as motivation for voters to vote for parties they more closely align with, instead of voting for the two largest because the voter may believe that vote was 'worthless' otherwise. The agreement was also made in order to prevent Monsilva turning into a two-party system.
