Bidding process

On 1 October 2012 the IOC announced in a letter to the National Olympic Committees the bidding calendar for the 2022 Winter Olympics:

  • 3 October 2012 – First information circular letter to NOCs
  • 5 June 2013 – IOC invites bid applicants and publishes the 2022 Applicant City Questionnaire
  • 14 September 2013 – Deadline for NOCs to submit cities for potential bids
  • 14 March 2014 – Submission of bid books
  • 16 June 2015 – Host city election at the xth IOC Session in x

Criteria

A firm criterion for the Winter Olympics is the availability of alpine ski slopes of certain sizes, which narrows down potential locations significantly, and often necessitates locations in less populated areas. The men's downhill requires at least 800 metres (2,600 ft) altitude difference along a course of around 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) in length.

For the 2022 Winter Olympics the IOC allowed a longer distance between events, so that alpine skiing can be held in a mountain area, and sports such as ice hockey and figure skating can be held in a large city up to 160 kilometres (99 mi) away where such arenas are already available or have greater usage after the games.

A certain spectator capacity is required, which is most often 10,000 but varies according to the particular sport. Furthermore, certain VIP areas are required at every venue.

Country  Tirol

The National Olympic Committee of Tirol first suggested a bid in Sëlva for the 2014 Winter Olympics, however, this bid was ultimately withdrawn in favour of a 2022 bid. This was done so as to ensure the Winter Olympics were held after the FIS Alpine Ski Championships which the city also bid for.

Presenting the bid in 2015, Premier Ulrike Kindle called upon members to vote for the city as a safe pair of hands, with the experience and infrastructure for hosting such extensive international events. Having hosted the Winter Olympics previously for the XXXX games, the bid minimises the need for new builds, with additional temporary stands used around existing events and stadia. Sëlva maintains several world-class facilities including the world renowned langlauf route the Sella Ronda and the nearby village of Antermëia's ski slopes have hosted a number of high-profile Alpine skiing events.

Country  Uulgadzar

On February 18th, 2013, the National Olympic Committee of Uulgadzar announced that Uulhot would be submitting a bid to the IOC as a candidate for the hosting of the 2022 Winter Olympics. Originally, the city was going to bid for the 2026 Olympics, but opted for the 2022 Olympics instead.

Uulhot, with an elevation of nearly 3 km above sea level, is one of the highest cities in the world, which produces cold weather suitable for the Winter Olympics. Uulhot hosts a variety of ski and snow resorts, and is located in the middle of the Uulhot mountain range and the Uulgadzar Plateau. Tsengeldeh Hüreelen is a large stadium complex that has the capacity to hold tens of thousands of spectators and can host multiple sports at once, allowing it to host all of the indoor sports.

In the northern part of Uulhot, ski and snow resorts Adz Jargal, Tsashot, and Hoydhot have the capacity to host all of the outdoor events besides alpine skiing. By 2022, they will be ready to hold the amount of spectators expected for these sports. The tracks are actively maintained at all three resorts and will be completely safe for both spectators and competitors.

About 20 kilometers northwest of Uulhot, the Uulgadzar Tal ski resort is capable of hosting the alpine skiing events. Built on the Uulgadzar Mountain- one of the highest mountains in Uulgadzar- it has several long tracks and the spectator capacity required for alpine skiing.

Uulhot has a public transportation system that is fully extended between all of the venues. Tsengeldeh Hüreelen, Adz Jargal, Tsashot, and Hoydhot are connected by bus and by the Uulgadzar metro system. Uulgadzar Tal is connected via train. The top of the resort is connected to the bottom via cable car, and the gear for each team will be transported up to the top of the resort, so all they have to worry about is competing.
