The Central Canal (Illyrian Iberic: Çentrale Çanale, [sentʁa'ʟə sana'ʟə]), known locally as The Main (Le Prinçipal, [ʟə prinsi'pal]), is the largest canal in Porto Ignaçio, New Illyricum. The Central Canal runs through the center of the city on the Main Island from the Bro Basin in the Bay of Fish to the western Pano Lagoon. The Central Canal is about 5.4 kilometres (3.4 mi) long, and 25 to 75 metres (82 to 246 ft) wide, with an average depth of around 7 metres (23 feet). Historically the canal has split the central noveras in the city, as well as serving as the main transportation route through the city.
History
Events
A variety of events take place throughout the year in Porto Ignaçio, with most being centered around the Central Canal.
Revolution Day
Each year on September 1 New Illyricum celebrates the establishment of the 1848 Constitution of New Illyricum and the end of the Second Republic of Illyricum as Revolution Day. In Porto Ignaçio to celebrate an annual gondola race is held, known as the Contoçarja, which is contested by twenty-seven gondolas, three from each of the nine noveras. Each of the four man teams races from Bro Isle in the Bro Basin 1.8 kilometres (1.1 mi) to the Palace of the Fish before continuing down the full length of the Central Canal and to Fort Handeçeo in the Pano Lagoon, a total length of around 7.9 kilometres (4.9 mi).
The winning novera is given the honor of hosting the Amorfesto, which is the main event of the celebrations held at night with traditional Illyrian music, dancing, and recreational Vipysco usage. To end the night two people, one male and one female, are selected to lead the revelers down to the Central Canal, which the group then swims across before the celebration ends.
Liberation Day
Liberation Day, although considered to be of somewhat less importance than Revolution Day, is a major holiday celebrated on June 25 to commemorate the execution of Jacó Monte and the end of the Viceroyalty of Ilírica. The celebration is begun with sixteen cannon shots from Fort Handeçeo being fired at dawn, representing the sixteen years of fighting in the Illyric Revolution. After that a parade of gondolas slowly travel from the Pano Lagoon up the canal, stopping at the Silesi and Livian Bridges before reaching the Palace of the Fish at sundown.
While at the Palace of the Fish the Grand Marshall of the Union gives a speech[1] before initiating a military parade around the Palace. After the end of the parade the celebration then moves onto a reenactment of the execution of Jacó Monte, where an effigy of him is hung and burned on a gondola, which in turn is itself set alight and sent out down the canal to burn. The people then follow the burning ship down the canal, singing and waving flags until the ship eventually sinks.
