The Peace Day Massacre was on November 11 1968 when Gjorkan soldiers shot over 350 unarmed protestors and celebrators during a peace day celebration. Crowds in Elkton had gathered to participate in the peace day celebrations celebrating the end of the Second Gjorkan Civil War. However, along with these crowds, the Gjorkan Republican Army had organized a protest to be held in accordance with the celebrations. Local Garda forces were aware of this and had called in additional army reinforcements. In the chaos of the large crowd, military officials were unable to distinguish protestors from celebrators. Major John Roche was in charge of the army soldiers within the area, and putting down the protest. Once he realized, his men were slowly losing control of the situation and that a riot was likely near to ensue, he gave the order for troops to open fire. Hundreds of celebrators and protestors were mowed down as they tried to escape. The Massacre is considered one of the deadliest attacks in Gjorkan history, and an infamous act synonymous with the cruelty of the military government.
