The 2020 Sequoyan coup d'état occurred on 28 May 2020 when left-wing factions of the Sequoyan Armed Forces overthrew President Cheasequah Waya shortly after Sequoyah became a full member of the Cooperation and Development Coalition (CODECO). Waya and Onacona were both arrested and removed from office. The coup led to protests against the military; the military government led by interim President Admiral Diwali Wesa agreed to hold new elections in October 2020 to elect a new president to serve the remainder of the 2020–2026 term. Sequoyah was expelled from CODECO shortly after the coup.
