Assassination
On Friday, October 4, 2058 at 12:23 PM, an assassin entered the Shamir Hall at a joint session of the National Parliament and shot President Eli Dupont and Prime Minister Clyde Schneider. Schneider was pronounced dead on the scene when paramedics showed up at 12:36 PM. Dupont was rushed to Levi Shamir Hospital and after four hours of emergency surguries and being in critical condition, the doctors declared him deceased at 5:10 PM. Another connnected attack was carried out again Vice President Dorothea Müller. Speaker of the Council Santiago Franco was sworn in as president at 5:31 PM.
Personal Life
Dupont was married twice. He first met Mira Dupont (née Rahal) in 2016 at Urshawabad National University. She was a journalist and they married in 2017. Mira gave birth to their daughter, Cecilia Dupont, in 2018. In 2024, Mira and Cecilia were flying from Urshawabad to Icaris and were killed in a plane crash.
In 2039, Dupont married Aimee Marguilles, a doctor, after four months of dating. They separated in 2041 and divorced in 2043 citing irreconcilable differences. At points in their divorce hearings, Marguilles claimed Dupont was both emotionally and physically abusive, a claim he vehementately denied. Marguilles was awarded much of Dupont's fortune in the final divorce settlement. Upon his death, Marguilles donated funds she had receieved to the Eli Dupont Foundation, an organization that sponsors business start ups and entrepreneurism.
Eli Dupont was known for his relationship with wealthy businessman and banker Scott Dillon. Dillon grew up with Dupont as a mentor and they stayed in touch for various times over the years. Dillon and Dupont both have made statements regarding their very close relationship; regarding that of father and son. Dupont and Dillon had a falling out in 2053 and in 2057 they spoke for the last time before Dupont's death.
Unbeknowest to the world, Dupont began dating reporter Lacey Blanchard, (sister of State Delegate and Presidential candidate, Karson Blanchard), and member of his press pool in 2053. Blanchard was 17 years his junior during their relationship. They were together until his death in 2058. Their relationship was not revealed until Blanchard's untimely death in 2066 (she had fallen asleep at the wheel and was struck by an oncoming car). Their relationship was quite a shock to many, especially as Karson Blanchard was the Libertist nominee for the 2057 election, in which he directly faced President Dupont, the administration his sister was reporting on. It is reported Lacey Blanchard and Eli Dupont took a relationship hiatus from January to July of 2057 during the election. A memoir titled, "Behind the Curtain" was Blanchard's written record of her relationship with Eli Dupont, his public persona versus his private, and their interactions up until his death. The memoir was published by Blanchard's sister.
The memoir, while being lambasted by some, contained highly personal and specific details regarding Dupont, his decisions as presidents, and the inner workings of his administration. Politicians that served with him critcized the book for painting them in a negative light; Dupont for most of his political career felt he was being played by his peers and influenced by special interests, despite seeingly charismatic and aggressive himself. Blanchard also wrote that Dupont respected her brother quite a bit, confiding in her that he felt he deserved to be president some day and that he would support him.
Abner Nazari and Eric Caldwell, two of Dupont's closest friends have both confirmed the existence of a long-standing relationship of a sensitive nature. They have confirmed their belief that Lacey Blanchard matched Dupont's words about his secret significant other as well as even claiming they had suspicions it was her. They also both claimed the four of them (Nazari, Caldwell, Karson & Lacey Blanchard) were present at the hospital.
Lacey Blanchard and Eric Cladwell married in 2061. They too had a large age gap of 13 years.
Security Service records also indicated Lacey Blanchard was at the hospital where Dupont was taken and was seen uncontrollably upset when hearing of Dupont's final passing.
Legacy
Eli Dupont is known as one of the most forward-thinking politicians in Icarisian politics. He was known by his peers for being a pragmatic and calm leader. His peers said his creative approach to complex problem solving was his best attribute. The populist movement he led in Icarisian politics for ideological freedom and independent thinking had ripple effects on the socio-political sphere for decades.
Controversies
After the 2059 leak, confidential documents from the investment and global policy firm, the Attica Group, revealed Dupont had entered an agreement with the firm to join their business after his presidency as their Chief of Global Missions. This role would put him at the center of influence in global politics, influencing everything from international organizations to individual national policies of foreign policies. When the news broke of this confidential deal, many criticized the late president for his shady backroom dealings with massive multi-national organizations and many Traditionalists have called for a national ban on any Attica Group subsidiaries or funded organizations in Icaris.
