The Aurona Station (Ladin: Aurona Staziun) is one of two permanent research outposts managed by the SNdM of Tirol. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION. Established in 1965, Aurona is newer than the Grohmann Station, Tirol's other outpost. The facility is located within COUNTRY's territorial claim on Tierrasur, the TERRITORY NAME.
History
In 1960, the SNdM put in a formal request to the Government of Tirol for funding to establish a continental base in Tierrasur. The request was granted and funding provided for the establishment of an inland base.
In 1962, Dr Julius Crist from the University of Maran led a team on an expedition to identify potential permanent sites. The site of Aurona was identified for the relatively shallow snows above an igneous intrusion, providing a solid rock base, in addition to the nearby mountains, a habitat for the White Marmot.
In 1963, a Tiroler team established a summer camp on the site. The two main objectives of the camp were the provision of logistical support for a study on Tierrasur ice cores and the establishment of a permanent research station.
The facility became fully operational in 1965. The first winterover began with a staff of 14, with one Quebecshirite.
