The Canton Spiders are a professional Peil team based in Canton, Gjorka. The Spiders compete in the Gjorkan Peil League (SPG) as a member of the South Division. Their home games are hosted at Gjorka Bank Stadium. The team was a founding member of the league in 1972. The Spiders name was choose in a poll of Canton residents over other names like the Owls and the Miners. The franchise is currently owned by Séan Fox who purchased the team in 2007.
The Spiders in the early SPG were a successful franchise and even going to two Wooster Cups in 1975 and 1976 but failing to win either. The Spiders remained a contender for much of the next decade but failed to make another Wooster Cup until 1985 which they also failed to win. Following the unsuccessful Wooster Cup bid, the Spiders would fail to have a winning record until 2000, and fail to make the playoffs until 2003. In 2005, the Spiders drafted QB Kyle Wooter in the first round. Wooter would become the best QB in franchise history setting records for passing yards and passing touchdowns. With the hiring of Mark O'Lea in 2010, he and Wooter would lead the Spiders to three Wooster cups, winning the Franchise's first two in 2011 and 2017. Following the 2017 championship, both Wooter and O'Lea retired, with O'Lea pursuing a career in broadcasting despite his young age. Since then, the Spiders have failed to secure a winning record and achieved the worst record in the league in 2021 earning them the top draft choice who they used to select QB Anthony Reece.
