The Social Democratic Party (Quebecshirite: Parti social-démocrate), officially abbreviated to SD, is a major center-left political party in Montesayette. The Social Democratic Party was founded in 1922 for members of the General Confederation of Labour, namely the nation's founders themselves, as a vehicle for future elections. Since its foundation, the Social Democratic Party has been in power almost continuously, except between 1969 and 1973.
Despite consistently winning elections by a landslide, except during the Third Commonwealth, the Social Democratic Party has maintained a coalition with the Muslim Democratic Party since 1922. The two parties have a customary non-compete agreement: the Social Democratic Party does not field candidates in the Muslim Democratic Party's strongholds, Nouvelle-Darbonnay and Hamicourt, and vice versa. The coalition between the two parties collapsed temporarily between 1993 and 2007 during Antonin Poulin's presidency. The Muslim Democratic Party left the coalition in protest of Poulin's handling of the conflicts in Darbonnay, which they viewed as oppressive and counterproductive. This division continued until Poulin's successor, Rogier David, took office and agreed to initiate a peace process in the region, leading to the restoration of the coalition and renewed cooperation between the two parties.
The Social Democratic Party is often described as a big-tent centrist party, including factions that range from democratic socialism to progressive conservatism. Despite the lack of a cohesive political ideology, the party's platform has historically supported multiculturalism and Montesayettean unionism, opposing provincial independence. It also supports increased defense spending and committing to ACES membership. Since its founding in 1922, the party's history and internal organization have been marked by intense factionalism among its members. The incumbent president and leader of the party is Hervé Dufriche-Desgenettes.
