The National Democratic Union (Cantuath: Aonadh Deamocratach Nàiseanta; ADN) is a conservative political party in Hapatmitas. It is considered the catch-all party of the centre-right spectrum of Hapatmitasian politics.
Founded in 1992, the National Democratic Union is one of the "big two" parties in the country, the other being the party's primary rival the Social Democratic Party, that has led governments since 1999. The current party chairperson is Doug Macintosh, serving since 13 April 2024. The party states its political platform is based on "freedom, democracy, responsibility and accountability, opportunity, advancement, and cooperation." The ADN is generally comprised of centre-right politicians with a large internal faction being liberal-conservative, although the party does not officially recognise itself as liberal-conservative.
The ADN is the second largest party in both houses of the Tiomnaidh with 120 out of 485 National Assembly seats and 34 out of 155 Senate seats. It forms and leads the governing coalition with the Christian Democrats and the Moderate Alliance. The ADN also leads 4 out of the 10 regional governments.
History
Founding era
After the 22nd and final party meeting of the National Democratic Party (Pàrtaidh Deamocratach Nàiseanta; PDN), the largest opposition party at the time, in 1992, the National Democratic Union became one of two factions that were the result of ideological separation in the party. The centre-leaning members of the PDN formed the Union of the Democratic Front, or simply the Democratic Front, in 1992. In the first provisional meeting of the party, Gage Dewar, the provisional chairman of the executive party committee, fundamentally declared:
"Splitting off from our former allies in the National Democratic Party was a decision to move forward from the old meanings of the monarchy and the Republic. The primary task of our party, from hereon out, must be to unify our meaning of democracy and bring together the similarly-thinking citizens to achieve a true nation of democratic people. We have to move away from the intentions of restoring single rule, intentions of fulfilling the agenda of the reactionaries, intentions of pushing toward total aggression. We have to move forward in unifying our institutions upon the dawn of the new century. Constructive reform work and the aspirations of millions of our people must be represented and pursued."
