Reykani Overseas Territories (Reykani:Reykjani yfirráðasvæði erlendis) consists of three Reykan-administered territories outside the main island of Reykanes. The permanently inhabited territories are internally self-governing, with Reykanes retaining responsibility for defence and foreign relations. Overseas regions have exactly the same status as Reykanes's mainland regions since the government treats all parts of the territories equally and thus anyone born on those territories recieves Reykan citizenship and passports. The Reykan Constitution provides that, in general, Reykan laws and regulations apply to Reykan overseas regions just as main island of Reykanes, but can be adapted as needed to suit the region's particular needs. Hence, the local administrations of Reykan overseas regions cannot themselves pass new laws. The Overseas Territories are the only area within Reykanes that includes the only land border for Reykanes, the Quebecshire-Reykanes border on White Islands.
History
The category of "Overseas Territories" (Reykani: Reykjani yfirráðasvæði erlendis) was created by Reykanes's constitutional reform of 29 July 1957. It reorganized the remnants of the Reykani overseas colonies that remained apart of the Reykani state under various statuses.
Overseas Territories are empowered to make their own laws, except in certain areas reserved to the Reykani national government (such as defense, international relations, trade and currency, and judicial and administrative law), with a cabinet member, the Minister of the Overseas, in charge of issues related to the overseas territories.
Political representation in legislature
With 4,576 (excluding the Tierrasurian population) inhabitants in 2023, overseas territories accounts for 0,12% of the population of the Republic of Reykanes. Due to their low population, they do not count as a seperate region, however they are included in other regions, that follow the arrangement of parliamentary constituencies. Birds Islands is considered apart of the Northwestern Region and the Lítilbyggðeyja is with Southern Capital region. As Lake Jan is a claimed territory it does not take apart in the legislature.
