Tyran (Vyrakar, Native Tyrani; Tiara, Romanyan) is a major coastal city on the Romanyan Sea and is the capital, largest city, and namesake of the Royal Federation of Tyrandor. It is also the capital of the local Province of Tyran and the most populous city in the country. Citing its ~3,000-year history as a powerful city-state, the city is regarded as the political, cultural, educational, financial, and military center of Tyrandor, and a significant metropolitan hub in southern Ecros. As of the 2022 census, its total population (city proper and surrounding environs) was 2,748,997. The current royally-appointed mayor of Tyran is Adama Guerriero, who has served the position since 02 April 2016.
The earliest record of the settlement of ancient Tyran, then known as Vyrakar, is the Vyrakar Manuscripts, which places the city's foundation by unified tribal sects in approximately 900 BCE, making it one of the oldest permanently-settled cities in the world. The manuscripts also indicate that the city was settled because of its strong defensive location in the geographical bowl between the Romanyan Sea, Serpentor River, and the Lupus Dentes to the north and east. As the city is the seat power for the Royal Court of Tyran, the city is home to the Vyrakar Citadel, the government center within which the main royal offices operate, located at the top of the Arce Caeli overlooking the southern part of the city.
For its long-term, symbolic status as a major economic and cultural center, Tyran alone has seen the most significant historical developments as compared to its royal provinces. Since its foundation in the first millennia BC, direct political control of the city has changed six times-- from the first tribespeople (~900 BC), the Romanyans (261 BC), the Rashiduns (652 AD), the Umayyads (661), the Savottans (747), the Abbasids (816), and finally becoming an independent state at the end of the Fourth Valerian Uprising (1136), with the exception of holding Montcrabin client status (from 1527 to 1781). The only major incident since is largely recognized as the Week of the Bonfires, which saw a coup d'etat and deposing of King Ardhan in 1965.
