History
The development of modern swim-fins, snorkels, diving masks, and breathing equipment in the early 20th century started scuba diving in Salisford. The formation of the first combat diver units in Salisfordian service coincided with the beginnings of modern scuba diving. This new-type of diving came to the attention of the Royal Salisfordian Navy and experimental naval engineer and frogmen units were formed in the 1910s and 1920s. These experimental units were reorganized into the Sommozzatori Reale, and divided into multiple parts. The Salisfordian Navy also created the frogmen training school at the San Pietro military base in Maripoli.
This unit saw some action through the early-to-mid 20th century, but its true test came in 1969 with the outbreak of the Salisfordian Civil War. Throughout the war, the Sommozzatori Reale remained loyal to Monarchist forces and were utilized to great effect in naval and coastal raids as well as for special operations. During the civil war, the unit gained a reputation for pulling off bold and daring missions. This reputation has had a permanent effect on the Sommozzatori Reale's esprit de corps which encourages swift and audacious planning and execution during operations.
