The 1978 Uulgadzan coup d'état was a military coup d'état in Uulgadzar that overthrew the People's Socialist Council, the primary government body of Uulgadzar at the time. It installed a military dictatorship under the rule of Bultechu Taichar.
The Red Square Revolution began in 1974, after years of ethnic violence under communist rule culminated in Rakakraina declaring its independence from Uulgadzar. Mismanagement of the military by the government led Rakakraina to make large gains in the first few years of the war, causing unrest within the military. After a decisive Rakakrainan victory at the Battle of Hoydgol, leading to the loss of a major Uulgadzan city and large Uulgadzan casualties, the military's discontent with the government grew. In 1976, the increasing unrest in the military led to a coup attempt.
