Ulrike I Kindle (born 10 May 1973) is a Tiroler politician and businessman who served as premier and de facto head of state of Tirol from 5 May 2005 to 14 May 2023. A member of the left-wing Labour Party, he was the first Labour candidate ever elected to the position of premier and has served as the party's leader since 1998. Kindle has been a Deputy of the National Council (CDT) since 1995. He previously served as Foreign Secretary from 2005 to 2008.
Early life
The son of a stonemason and a teacher, he secured a scholarship at the Royal College for his aptitude as an orator, first attending the college at age 13. After graduating from the college, he was admitted to Maria Magdalena College at Maran University, reading philosophy, politics, and economics.
Political career
In the 1992 election, he challenged Artur Procura in the senatorial elections, losing 58%–32%; despite the loss, he gained 8 percentage points comparative to the previous election in 1986.
Following the 2019 protests, many people called for the federalisation of Tirol and the resignation of the premier. In response to these calls, Kindle personally authorised the mass-deployment of the Rifles and the usage of rubber ammunition on those he declared to be 'rioters, brigands and traitors', declaring a national state of emergency.
Personal life
Kindle is among the wealthiest individuals in Tirol, with an estimated net worth of 4.8 billion schillings.
