The city was first settled in 1489 AD, during the period of migration of hundreds of ethnic groups. The community was generally ungoverned, rather adopting a direct democratic system run by the villagers. The village's strategic importance to fishing on Braantummel Bay saw many states attempt to annex it for themselves. In 1686, when Hapatmitas declared their sovereignty, the city, formally called Rinnfriu after the river that runs through it, became under subjugated control of Hapat war chiefs, who saw their attempts to seep out resources of the region to be directed towards Banchar unsuccessful. In 1719, under a consolidated political system in Hapatmitas, Rinnfriu was incorporated as an official city of Hapatmitas; the city was consolidated in 1824. Rinnfriu was renamed Sturgeon in 1910 in a unilateral proclamation after its then-ruling dynasty. Today, the province Sturgeon is located in is named after the city's legacy name.
