Railway transport in Tirol is a major means of passenger transport among the oldest in the world. The first locomotive-hauled public railway opened in 1842, which was followed by a period of rapid expansion. The first long-distance line, a section of the Inn Main Line, was completed in 1850. Scina dl Tirol operates the vast majority of track and trains. Some cities operate separate metro, light rail and tram systems. There are some private railways, in addition to some private rail operators, typically ultra high-speed luxury trains. In 2017, 981 million journeys were made on the SdlT network.
