Maria ruled with her regent Marius Obrius and fought the Wars of the North Rivers against the Second Republic of Illyricum. Following the Battle of Gobolana, Maria was forced to surrender in 1831 signing the Treaty of Marina with president of Illyricum Romulonysyos Anyastynaxos. Maria and her daughter Sophia Adriana fled to the State of the Church and lived in exile in San Salvador del Oeste.
