uwu, also stylized as UwU, is an emoticon mimicking a cute face. The u characters represent closed eyes, while the w represents a mouth. Usage and Variation
uwu is often used to denote cuteness, happiness, or tenderness. Excessive usage of the emoticon can also denote attraction to the recipiant. The emoticon has gained significant popularity in online communties in Tranquillia especially those related to the Quties, anime and furry subcultures.
uwu also has a more surprised variant, owo (or OwO; Also associated with the phrase "Whats this?" Thus forming the suprjsed expression "OwO, Whats this?") that may also denote cuteness, as well as curiosity, perplexion and arousal. owo originated online in 2016, and gained popularity in 2018 on the Tranquillian forum ChanChan; as opposed to uwu, the o characters represent open eyes. OwO is often associated with internet personality JoeyBigEyes who uses the emoticon as a catchphrase.
History
UwU is believed to have been used as early as 2003 on internet chat rooms however the first documented use of the emoticon was on 12 September 2005, on popular message board /anm where a user named "Kingfish78" replied to a lewd image of fictitious anime character Sakuchi with the phrase "Bruh, when I see Sakuchi she just makes me wanna go UwU all up in her".
Notable uses
On 19 march 2019 the official bitter account for the Ministry of foreign affairs and trade (MFAT) bittered "UwU" before shortly deleting the beet.
