Rail transport in Majocco is the national network of railways in Majocco, Currently operated by ONCF, the national state-owned railway company, controls most of the passenger and freight services on the national network managed by its subsidiaries, ONCF Rail. Majocco currently operates a total of 20,000 kilometres of railway.

The first railway line in the country opened in 1901 from Esplici to Arabat during protectoracy, since 1989 the network has experienced major modernisation with the arrival of the QTR high-speed rail service which has been consistently expanded in subsequent years.

In 2022, there were over 760 million journeys on the Majoccan national rail network, among which, 650 million on ONCF services and 110 million on RATM sections of the RER, at the same time, 85% of Majoccan cargo is shipped via railway, a huge proportion when compared to most countries.

National and regional services (TER) are complemented by an important network of urban railways which are rapidly growing. Seven major cities are served by some kind of metro system (Majorca, Arabat, Nfifkhi, Darrabida, Esplici, Tetouanate and Khasit), while 15 metropolitan areas are additionally served by LRT among of which 13 were inaugurated in the 21st Century.

History

In 1899, the Quebecshirite engineer Arentiel Mariot-Pierre Ramond proposed to the Governor general, Louis Decartesto build seven national railways from Majorca, to travel "short distances within the Protectorate".

However, the history of railways in Majocco begins in 1902, when the first trains operated on the Gham-Esplici to Arabat Railway, the first Majoccan line, granted by the order of Louis Decartes in 1899.

Operation

Since 1989, Majoccan railways have been highly focused on urban areas.

Traffic is concentrated on the main lines: 80% of activity is done on 30% of the network, and 46% of smaller lines only drive 6% of the traffic.

Freight transport

Freight transport has increased since the late 1980s.

Since 1 January 2022, the freight market has been open to conform to International agreements. New operators had already reached 85% of the market at the end of 2020.

Passenger transport

Short and middle distance

The Transport express régional (TER) is directed by the administrative Provinces of Majocco. They contract with the ONCF for line exploitation.

Long distance

The ONCF directly manage this class of trains. The QTR is used on the most important destinations, while Intercités carriages are still used for other lines.

Network

The Majoccan railway network, as administered by ONCF Rail, as of June 2022, is a network of commercially usable lines of 20,000 kilometres (12,000 mi), of which 12,500 km (7,800 mi) is electrified. 1,500 km (930 mi) of those are high speed lines (QTR), 9,000 km (5,600 mi) dispose of two or more tracks. 4,150 km (2,580 mi) are supplied with 1,500 V DC, 8,150 km (5,060 mi) with 25 kV AC at 50 Hz. 80 km (50 mi) are electrified by third rail or other means.

1,500 V is used on the east, and HSR lines and the western part of the country use 25 kV electrification.
