Classification
Regulation of aviation facilities in Lurjize lies with the Lurjizean Civil Aviation Authority (AACL). The AACL's clasification system was established in 1989 pursuant to the 1985 Lurjizean Civil Aviation Master Plan and adjacent study by the AACL. The list is updated as the need arises, and is otherwise reevaluated every four years by the AACL. In the current classification system, 33 airports owned or operated by the national government are placed into one of three main categories:
1. International airports are airports capable of handling international flights and have border control facilities. Airports in this category include airports that currently serve, or previously served, international destinations. There are only 2 airports currently in this category, Lurjize Gateway International Airport (located in Paluri and Magalaki International Aiport. Lurjize Gateway International Airport has retained the status since its construction in 1947, while Magalaki International Airport had the status from 1978-1984 and since 2001. Despite their names, Tavisebi International Airport and Sababich International Airport do not regularly serve international destinations.
2. Principal airports are airports which serve domestic destinations. There are 17 in total. This category is further subdivided into two types:
- Class A principal airports are airports capable of serving jet aircraft with a capacity of at least 78 seats. As of December 2021, there are 6 airports under this sub-category, all of which have regularly-scheduled air service. Airports in this category include all domestic airports that label themselves as "international" airports, as well as one other airport on San Estefano Island, one on Izoleba, and four on mainland Lurjize.
- Class B principal airports are airports capable of serving propeller aircraft with a capacity of at least 19 seats. There are 11 airports under this sub-category, most of which have regularly-scheduled or seasonal passenger air service.
3. Community airports are airports that are used for general aviation or irregular service to hard-to-reach destinations primarily in southern Lurjize. There are currently 14 airports in this category. Only two community airports have scheduled air service - these are Aghmokarebi Airport and Pirveba District Airport.
