Healthcare in Tirol
Healthcare in Tirol is provided in a two-tier system, in which effectively all individuals receive publicly funded care, but individuals may purchase supplementary health insurance for more comfortable and flexible care. Notably, this cannot effect the medical quality of treatment received. Some individuals, and foreign nationals not entitled to free healthcare, choose to pay for their healthcare privately, although prices in public healthcare services are capped even for foreign nationals.
Healthcare in Tirol is universal for permanent residents of Tirol, in additional to foreign nationals from a number of countries. Foreign students may enrol in the Tiroler insurance scheme, for a fee of 80 schillings per month.
Enrolment in the public healthcare system is broadly automatic for Tiroler nationals, whilst permanent residents must enrol formally through the Department of Health and Social Care or through Tiroler consular services in their nation. Enrolment is compulsory for Tiroler nationals and permanent residents, even if an individual purchases supplementary health insurance.
