Gcuwa is the capital, largest city in Kwazulu-Ciskei, that has total of 1,4 million inhabitants as of 2021, and its cultural, economic, and political center in the country. The city is situated on a river, which wears the same name, Gcuwa, where the city takes its name from. The city itself is located in the domains of Ciskei. It is connected by the, N1 national highway and the national railways.

The city is home to the Osuthu Royal Palace, the home of the royal family and the Ciskei parliament building, and other governmental institutions. Most of the major companies and banks have their head offices in Gcuwa.
