Education in Tirol is overseen by the Ministry of Education. Local government authorities are responsible for implementing policy for schools and education at a local level.
In Tirol, state schools may be selective Ginase or comprehensive Captaincy School. All schools must teach, at a minimum, the national curriculum as decided by the Ministry of Education, through secondary legislation. It is also entrusted partly to the provinces who maintain a degree of control over arts and cultural studies.
The state-funded education system is divided into stages by age, primary education from 7 until 12; further subdivided into lower primary, ages 7 until 10, and upper primary, ages 10 until 12. A combination of end of primary assessments, teacher assessment and average grades are used to divide students at 12 between the academically focused Ginase and the more vocationally focused Captaincy School. In the fourth year of Ginase, preliminary examinations (prelimes) are taken, which inform the courses students are allowed to progress with if they proceed with education. The final two years of ginase (5th and 6th) are based on reapplications, continuing students require at least 80% in four preliminary examinations, captaincy students who achieve highly may also be recommended for inclusion for advanced examinations (A-James).
