There are a large variety of brands and producers based in Kernev.

History

New variaties of cider and dessert apples were likely brought with the first settlers of Kernev in the 1st Century, although there is evidence of native crabapple species in Kernev before settlement.

In the 17th Century, poisoning caused by the lead components used in cider presses became associated with cider-consumption, this illness was termed Kernev colic, which declined through the 18th Century as lead components were replaced increasingly with steel.

Cider production is most prominent in the western and southern hundreds with the lowest production in Ryslegh Hundred and Lysnowydh Hundred, and the greatest production in Pow Ereder and is higher in Kernevic-speaking communities than in Jackian communities. Historically, farm labourers in Kernev would receive part of their pay in the form of a substantial daily allowance of cider, meaning nearly every farm in Kernev has a cider orchard, though the allowance was heavily declining between 1970 and 2000 until it was made obsolete when the minimum wage was introduced in 2003. Cloudy, unfiltered ciders made in Kernev are often called "scrumpy", derived from the Kernevic Jackian verb scrumping which refers to workers draining and taking the bottom of cider barrels below the tap when a barrel was thought to be empty in Kernevic this is referred to as tardra, meaning tapping.
