Axton Jaya (born 10 December 1975), also known as Axe, is a Karimunese politician who is the 10th president of Karimun and the incumbent Governor of East Sulawesi. Elected in June 2009 as the third president not to come from an elite political or military background, he was previously the Mayor of Surabaya from 2002 to 2007, and the Governor of Sumatera from 2007 to 2009 before resigning to run for presidency.
He achieved national prominence in 2003 for his work as the Mayor of Surabaya. A member of the Karimun Solidarity Party, he was its candidate for the 2007 Sumatera gubernatorial election, alongside H.P. Hutapea (often known as HP) as his running mate. Defeating incumbent Fauzi Bowo, he took office in October 2007 and reinvigorated Mills politics, introducing publicised blusukan visits (unannounced spot checks) and improving the city's bureaucracy, reducing corruption in the process. He also introduced years-late programs to improve quality of life, including universal healthcare, dredging the city's main river to reduce flooding, and inaugurating the construction of the city's subway system.
