Aktau is the Capital and the largest city in Akhmola. it is the economic centre of the country and also serves as the capital of the Akhtau region. The city was first settled in the 8th century BC, however it was made the capital of Akhmola in 1493 by King Serikbolat I. Aktau has remained the seat of power since then, many prominent governmental buildings are located in Aktau, such as The Chamber of Dukes and The Council of Man, as well as the Royal Palace, also known as the Palace of King Serikbolat.

Akhtau is the most visited city in Akhmola by tourists and contains many popular tourist destination, such as the Royal Palace, The Royal Akhmolan Museum, and the royal Gardens of Akhtau. Aktau has two airports, Aktau City Airport, and King Erzhan Airport, commonly abbreviated to KEA
