General elections were held in Rotorua on 8 March 1955 to elect all 100 members of the Apooraa and the President. The election saw the Socialist Party secure a majority in the Apoora and elect a President for the first time in Marama Teariki. The left-wing surge in the election led to the 1955 Rotoruan coup d'état and the end of the First Republic.
