The schilling (Ladin: Schilling) has been the currency of Tirol since 1983. The schilling is divided into 100 denara.

History

First schilling

The first schilling was established by the Schilling Act of December 20, 1894, at a rate of ten schillings to every mark and issued on March 1, 1895. The schilling was abolished following the return to the gold standard in 1912 with the introduction of the Tiroler Goldmark.

Second schilling

The schilling was reintroduced after the constitution of 1982, by the associated Schilling Act. Notes were issued from April 1983 in denominations of 50 denara, 2, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100, and 1000 schilling. The exchange rate to the goldmark was 1:10 to increase liquidity in the markets. The Schwaz mint also began issuing the first coins in 1984.

With a second "schilling" law on 30 November 1990, new banknotes were introduced. The earlier notes could be exchanged for new notes at par for the first 150 schilling and at a rate of 1 new schilling for 3 old schillings thereafter. Coins were not affected by this reform. The currency stabilised in the late 1990s, with the schilling being tied to the Quebecshirite Credit at a rate of ₵1 = 3 schillings. Following the recession of 1995, the schilling was decoupled allowing for extensive use of quantitative easing.

Coins

Between 1983 and 1990, coins in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 denara; and 1 and 5 schilling were introduced. The 50 denara; 1 and 5 schilling were struck in aluminium, as was the second type of 10 denara coin. The 1 and 5 denara and the first type of 10 denara were in zinc, with the 20 denara struck in aluminium-bronze. The 1 denarum was only struck in 1990, while the 20 denara coins were suspended from production in 1954 and 1952, respectively. In 1957, silver 10 schilling coins were introduced, followed in 1959 by aluminium-bronze 50 groschen and 1 schilling, and in 1960 by silver 5 schilling coins. Thus, the 5 schilling coins went from an aluminium composition to a silver one. Cupro-nickel replaced silver in the 5 and 10 schilling coins in 1991 and 1993, respectively. An aluminium-bronze 20 schilling coin was introduced in 1997.

Silver coins are in the value of 25, 50, 100, 200 and 500 schilling, but gold coins also exist for 500 and 1,000 schilling. They are considered legal currency, but are rarely found in actual transactions.
