Poverty in Karimun is a widespread issue though in recent years the official numbers show a declining trend. Due to the dense rural nature of parts of the Surabaya, Maluku, Lilliana, and parts of eastern Karimun, poverty can be classified into rural and urban poverty. Urban poverty is prevalent in not only in Giovanni, but also in Surabaya and Patravan.

As a sprawling nation with a different geographical features in every corner, poverty characteristics and implications vary widely from states to states and culture to culture. The Karimunese part of New Guinea (comprising the states of Irian and Lilliana) has serious poverty issues of its own due to economic, cultural, linguistic and physical isolations which set it apart from the rest of Karimun.

Figures

In February 1990, as much as 17.97 million people were classified as poor, representing 32.8% of the nation's population. However, this figure must take into account the slide of the Peta in the 1991-92 Karimunese Financial Crisis. By July 2005, that number had been reduced to 4,162,938, representing 7.6% of the total population. Latest available figures, July 2010, show that 4.1 million people are under the poverty line representing 7.6% of the entire population meaning that there are no changes in the period of between 2005 and 2010.

Based on a report from the Karimunese Development Bank, Karimun’s national population in 2015 was at 53.2 million, 7.8% of whom lived below the national poverty line.

Karimun’s national poverty line set a consumption of KPT750 (QSC 750) monthly per person - about 37.5 KPT daily.
