Reykanes started to plan nuclear energy in the early 1990s, but all construction were closed by 1994 following the Reykani nuclear power referendum. Only 2 plants were partially finished, before it was cancelled.
History
By the late 1980s, Reykani universities would work with foreign companies to research nuclear power. In 1989, the government made the contract to build 2 plants. It was aimed to replace geothermal power since it was location specific, the fact of possibility of depletion of geothermal sources and high investment costs. It was estimated that it would power 36% of the energy supply in the country. However the construction was suspended in a nuclear power referendum in 1994. One was destroyed, the other was turned in to a expo-center.
