The National University of Hapatmitas (Cantuath: Oilthigh Nàiseanta na Hapatmitas; ONH) is a public research university system in Hapatmitas. Originally founded as the King's Imperial College (Cantuath: Colaiste Ìmpireil an Rìgh) in 1889 by James VII, the university was overhauled in 1959 to become the basis for a public, nationwide higher-education system. Headquartered in Donideann, the system is comprised of twenty-eight undergraduate and graduate campuses spread across the country, notably in Banchar, Peairtchu, and Strantun, as well as three academic laboratories. Although each campus is statutorily administrated by the system, almost all campuses, which itself could be defined as a university, are nearly autonomous, dictating their academic policies, schools, and executive staff. In 2018, nine of the twenty undergraduate campuses and three of the five graduate campuses were ranked among the top 25 most prestigious and academically challenging schools in the country by BICN scores.
The ONH system is currently administrated by the Regency Board, a body jointly appointed by the Ministry for Education and Research and the Tiomnaidh every six years. Each campus is considered independent from the jurisdiction of any municipal, provincial, or other local government, with its autonomy being protected by the quadrennially-renewing endowment and charter from the central government. It is only one of two higher education systems in the country, the other being the Select Universities system which is focused more on achieving students on the local provincial level.
