Inverness is primarily a tourist town. It is the provincial capital for the Fiordland Administrative region and is the staging ground for many backpacking and hiking expeditions into the Fiordland National Park. It is the southern terminues of the Trans-Fiordland Railroad (TFR) which snakes through the wilderness up to Bayport. It is also where one can access the Fiordland Scenic Highway and houses the National Park's Headquarters.
