Naturally Occurring Diseases

Endemic

Rakeo Iron Fever is caused virus carried by some species of mice and other rodents. It causes fever, rash, fatigue, and in rare cases, hemorrhaging. It was first experienced by iron miners. However, the number of suitable rodent carriers is low, and only 10 to 20 cases are reported yearly. Prior to the advent of modern medical techniques, the disease had a mortality rate of nearly 50% of those infected, but with modern symptom management, fatalities are rare.

Giardia is naturally found in some streams, and is spread through infected animals or persons defecating near bodies of water. Giardia infects around ~100 to ~200 people annually, and with medical attention, is entirely survivable, if incredibly unpleasant.

Largely due to native animals ill-suited as reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens, Rakeo did not harbor many epidemic diseases in its prehistory.

While this helped prevent mass outbreaks, the disease remained endemic, particularly in lower class sections of the cities, where sanitary drinking water could prove too expensive.
