Background

With no senators leaving office between the 2016 election and the end of 2021, there have been no by-elections in this term. Hence all senators at dissolution are those elected during in the 2016 election.

Electoral system

The 2022 Senate election will be conducted using the same system of plurality in triple member constituencies as the previous election. The electorate of each province elects three senators in three separate contests.

Tiroler citizens living abroad are entitled to vote in the last province they were legally resident in Tirol, so long as they ceased being resident at most sixteen years ago.

Senators not standing for re-election

Tomas Vierso, the senator for Passeier II, is standing down at the termination of this term following a number of accusations of bullying and workplace harassment. Though he "categorically denies" all such claims, he has stated that in order for public confidence in the senate to be fully restored, it was in the national interest not to seek re-election. Giano Osmundson of the Internationale Party is standing down at the termination of this term, though he has not provided reasoning for his resignation, a report from the Innsbruck Zeita claimed his campaign did not believe that he could win re-election following the 2016 Ozidenta scandal.
