"The Great War" is a series of alternate history novels written by Nikolai Petrovski. Originally published as short stories in Gran Glorian Magazine from 1906 to 1914, Petrovski began writing the first book in 1910, completing it in 1915. Published in 1916 by Hazbinian National Publishing, the series extends until 1930, exploring a fictional universe with a unique geography.
Set in 1916, during a conflict between the powers Republic Quebecshire (using the Quebecshirite language) and Empire (a neighboring nation to Republic Quebecshire, with the Kivuaian language), the plot follows the lives of various characters linked to the armies of these nations. As the war scenario unfolds, different nations become entangled for their own reasons. The series provides an alternative perspective on Terraconserva, delving into how 20th-century events would have unfolded in this fictional context.

Plot
The early tales recount the saga of Sebastian Wagner and his troop from the imperial army in combat on the frontlines of a major war, spanning from 1916 to 1918 and culminating in the protagonist's death in a decisive battle. When the story was adapted into a series of books and first published in 1915, it begins in 1917, a year after the war's onset, following the journey of Heinrich Wagner and his rise in the military career. The author never discloses if Heinrich has any familial connection to Sebastian, the previous protagonist. Throughout the books, aside from the protagonist's main storyline, plots involving the high-ranking military of the Empire, soldiers, and important politicians from other nations are explored. The narrative concludes in 1924, with the Empire's defeat and the Allies' victory.
