Svedonia, officially The Free Nation of Svedonia (Svedonian: Fristaten Svedonien) is a nation on Ecros. Svedonia borders Dragonia to the west as well as Tirol and Quebecshire to the east. The Svedonian economy is largely self-sufficient, with any trade occuring via the capital of Freista, with connections via water, land and Freista Aerodrome. Svedonia is a semi-direct democracy, where the highest position in the legislature is known as the Speaker. The current Speaker is Philip Andersson. The Speaker is in charge of proposing new laws to referendum as well as proposing amendments to current laws. Laws affecting most citizens’ lives in a large way are voted on via referenda. Other laws are voted on by the Svedonian Legislature. If a referendum is held, it is required for a proposition of new law to come into effect, that the voters for the proposition has to exceed the voters without. If over 4/6 of nationwide eligible voters are abstaining, the proposition is declared invalid.

History

In 1200 AD, the nomadic tribe of Svedari begin settling down in the area around Freista. The chief of the Svedari, Gustav Holandus, was elected ruler of the region, which he named Svedonia. Holandus instituted a loose law stating that all people considering themselves residents in Svedonia would be permitted to propose laws to the ruler. According to some historians, this might be the reason why today's Svedonians are proud of their political freedom. Some tribesmen went on to found a port town first known as Hamnby. The town was officially recognized in 1235 AD, as Holandus decided to have his seat there. The Holandus Building now serves as the seat of the Government of Svedonia.

The title of ruler would go on to be passed on by descendants of Holandus until the year 1506 AD when Sigurd Holandus of Svedonia founds the Svedonian Legislature and Government. Ruler Sigurd would not entitle any relative to the rulership and the government resolved after his death in 1523 AD that the rulership is abolished and Svedonia would be reclassified as a republic. The legislature and government elections would not be very democratic up until 1783, when the legislature resolves to end the segregation of nobility and workers. Since 1783 all citizens of Svedonia are allowed to vote in all elections and referenda.

Etymology

Svedonia is called "Svedonien" in the local language. This word is from the root svedo-, meaning "associated with the Svedari" (see #History), and the suffix -onien, meaning "place of".
