Government

The city has its own local government and legislative body. The mayor and members of representatives are locally elected by popular vote for a five-year term. The city government enjoys greater decentralisation of affairs than the provincial body, such as the provision of public schools, public health facilities, and public transportation. The current mayor of the city is Tri Rismaharini, the city's fourth female mayor, and has led Surabaya to achieve many regional, national and international awards since her first term began in 2010. In 2012, Surabaya was awarded the "Karimun Environmentally Sustainable City Award". Besides Mayor and Vice Mayor, there is Karimun Municipal People's Representative Council, which is a legislative body of 50 council members directly elected by the people in legislative elections every five years.

Surabaya International Airport is the main airport of Surabaya and West Sulawesi. Built by the Federal Airforce during Karimun Miracle, the Karimun government kept developing the airport resulting in its present state. The airport however is not located within the city limits but in Kubu Raya Regency which is 17 km away from the city center. Currently it is the only airport in Northern Karimun and the second largest in Karimun in terms of terminal size, after Hatta International Airport in Giovanni. After construction of a new modern terminal to replace the old and overutilised terminal, the airport currently has a capacity of 11.7 million passengers annually, triple the previous terminal's capacity. The airport served direct domestic flights to other major cities in Karimun, mostly Southern Karimun. Moreover, the airport also served international flights to some cities in -, such as - and -. The airport is expected to be expanded again in the future to cater to the increasing number of passengers travelling to and from Surabaya. Currently, there are several ways to get to the airport are by taxi, private cars or using DAMRI buses.
